24.66 Million mobile devices were “Made in Pakistan” in 2021

According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, local manufacturing plants manufactured/assembled have increased compared to the imported smartphones. Made in Pakistan smartphones are increasing with time.

Local manufacturing plants produced/assembled 24.66 million mobile devices in the calendar year 2021, up from 13.05 million in the calendar year 2020, an increase of 88 percent.

According to official PTA data, commercial mobile handset imports decreased to 10.26 million in 2021 from 24.51 million in 2020. Made in Pakistan smartphones are increasing in number reducing the price of the smartphones.

The 1.53 million mobile handsets produced/assembled domestically (Made in Pakistan) include 0.86 million 2G and 0.67 million smartphones. Furthermore, according to PTA data, on the Pakistan network, 53% of mobile devices are smartphones and 47% are 2G.

22.12 million mobile phones were “Made in Pakistan” while imports stayed at 9.95 million in 2021 (January till November).

Despite the increase in local mobile phone (Made in Pakistan) production, Pakistan imported $1.270 billion worth of mobile phones in the first seven months of 2021-22, up from $1.135 billion in the same period the previous year, representing an increase of 11.86 percent, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

According to PTA data, the local manufacturing trend demonstrates a good response to the PTA’s Mobile Device Manufacturing (MDM) Authorization regulatory regime, with local manufacturing resulting in the manufacture of 24.66 million phones in a year’s time, including 10.06 million 4G smartphones.
