Pakistan finally launches e-passport system – what are the enhanced security features?

Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan launched e-passport system in Pakistan which is considered a revolutionary step towards digital Pakistan. Imran Khan in his speech highlighted the importance of digitization to overcome corruption issues in Pakistan.

An electronic chip will be included in the new biometric passport. The new passport would include 29 new and improved security features.

E-Passports can be used to gain access to the e-gate service at any international airport worldwide. Diplomatic and government passports will be the first to benefit from the service.

The electronic passport which is in accordance with international standards is the biggest up-gradation of Pakistani travel documents since 2004. This will help in the prompt and easy immigration of Pakistani citizens during their travel.

Initially the diplomatic and government officials in Pakistan would be able to use an e-passport facility.

An e-passport is a highly secure travel document that contains biometric information about the holder on an embedded microchip.
