‘Friendship ended with Mudasir’, the most viral meme to come out of Pakistan, has been auctioned at an online NFT platform by a Lahore and London-based startup Alter for 20 Ethereum tokens — equivalent to $51,776 based on their current market price.

Muhammad Asif Raza Rana, a Gujranwala man immortalised the sad saga of his friendship through a photoshopped post titled, ‘Friendship ended with Mudasir’. The Facebook post had gone viral and earned global headlines before becoming an all-time favourite meme.

The post explained how Rana found a new best friend in Salman Ahmad Naqash after taking away the title from Mudasir Ismail Ahmad, who had been his best friend until then. Informing people about the major update about his life, Rana alleged that Ahmad was selfish and had an attitude problem.

The meme went viral on the internet and the picture gathered 47,000 reactions, 56,000 shares, and 27,000 comments. Asif Raza also gained international fame as his meme was recreated by multiple others on YouTube and Twitter.

Friendship meme Auctioned at NFT Platform

A non-fungible token (NFT) is one-of-a-kind digital assets that is stored using blockchain technology, the same technology that allows for the creation of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. The majority of NFTs are held on the Ethereum blockchain, which is a public ledger. The picture can be compared to a “trading card” or a one-of-a-kind piece of art in Roth’s case.

Now in 2021, the announcement-turned-meme was auctioned as one of Pakistan’s first meme NFT, selling for $51,530 or 20 ethereum by Alter, which conducted the sale on the digital art marketplace Foundation, the world’s largest platform for NFT listings.

The meme was brought by Andrew King, co-founder of Mechanism Capital — a cryptocurrency investment company for 20 ethers.
